Our History
The History of Vaughan in Motion
It all started at a Knights of Columbus meeting of the Bishop Clune Council 11535 of Maple. It was discovered that one of our young Brothers, Frank Iaboni was diagnosed with brain cancer
- It was suggested that the K of C should stage a “Walk” as a fundraiser for cancer and as support for our young brother knight
- That same evening a committee was formed with Dr. Greg D’Orio, Leonard Dyanand, John Iorio and Peter Badali
1996
The first “Walk” was held in June in partnership with the York Catholic District School Board (YCDSB). $8,000 was raised and donated to the Canadian Cancer Society
- Three Maple schools participated, including St David’s, Our Lady of Peace and Father John Kelly
1997
The Walk route was revised to 5km, starting from the Maple Community Centre looping Keele, Major Mackenzie, Melville, Cunningham, McNaughton and back to MCC
- $9.000 was raised for the Canadian Cancer Society
1998
The first “Gala for Cancer Care” was held in May to give thanks to our sponsors
2000
The group was incorporated as “Vaughan in Motion”
- The 5km “Walk for Cancer Care” was moved indoors to Vaughan Mills Mall. With a 1.7 km inside loop; 3 times around the mall and you’ve walked 5k!
2005
The first “Golf for Cancer Care” was held, bringing our annual events to three
2006
Up to this year, $650,000 was raised for the Canadian Cancer Society
- Donations were now directed to the York Central Hospital in Richmond Hill which was serving the Vaughan community. Funds were used to purchase Doppler machines which help locate veins for patients undergoing chemotherapy
2009
York Central receives approval for a second hospital. Donations were now directed to a
cancer care unit in the new hospital
2011
$25,000 was donated for a new MRI unit that helps detect cancers
2014
Vaughan in Motion committed $1,000,000. to the 6th floor Medical/ Surgical Inpatient Unit where patients recover from Cancer surgeries
2019
Our 25th Anniversary. Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital, Canada’s first SMART hospital, opens with the 6th floor Medical/ Surgical Unit dedicated to Vaughan in Motion for Cancer Care
